HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – Housing relief is on the way for kupuna who survived the Maui wildfires.
The non-profit, J. Walter Cameron Center, is launching Na Hale Kupuna (NHK), an affordable housing project funded by Maui County’s Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) and the federal CARES Act.
NHK offers seven long-term condominium units in West, Central, and South Maui.
One and two-bedroom units will be available to accommodate households up to five people.
To qualify, the primary applicant must be at least 62 years old and show proof their primary residence in Lahaina was damaged beyond habitation in the Aug. 8, 2023 wildfires.
Households must also have a combined gross annual income at or below 80 percent of the Area Median Income (AMI) as determined by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).
Rent will be capped at 30% of the household’s gross income
One-bedroom units will start as low at $300/month.
Two-bedroom units will start at $400/month.
Leases will be set at 12 months, with an option to extend.
Some units will allow pets and assistance animals; all units accept registered assistance dogs.
Tenants will be responsible for utilities not included in rent, and a security deposit equivalent to one month’s rent is required. Additional pet deposits may apply, excluding registered assistance animals.
The application window runs from Tuesday, Dec. 3 through Friday, Dec. 20.
